H1N1 Post Pandemic
The World
Health Organization (WHO) has declared an end to the 2009 H1N1
influenza pandemic [ www.flu.gov
]. According to the WHO, the H1N1 virus has not disappeared but
the intensity of outbreaks globally is similar to that seen
during seasonal flu epidemics. The World Health Organization has
also noted that there is still a likelihood that the H1N1 virus
may cause serious disease in younger age groups and pregnant
women. The 2010/2011 seasonal flu vaccine, which routinely is
comprised of 3 strains of influenza virus, will include the H1N1
strain. This will provide continued protection from the H1N1
virus this coming flu season.
To
protect yourself and others from flu, a 3 –step approach is
recommended:
-
Vaccination for
seasonal flu every year.
-
Practice everyday
protection from germs,
such as hand
washing and covering your cough.
-
If recommended by
your doctor, use of anti-viral
medications.
