Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. It is probably not possible, or even desirable, to totally avoid all stress. What is important is to reduce or control the stress in your life so that it doesn’t cause physical, emotional, or behavioral problems.

Too much stress, or poorly handled stress, can lead to physical problems such as insomnia or headaches, or more seriously, to high blood pressure and heart disease.

It can affect your emotional well-being as well. Some people may react to stress with anger, anxiety, withdrawal, or sadness. Some may strike out verbally or physically at   objects, other people, pets or children .Others self-medicate with drugs, alcohol, or food.

Learning to reduce stress and to manage the stress you can’t eliminate plays an important  part in keeping you healthy.

Mental Health America, a national organization dedicated to promoting mentally healthier lives, offers the following tips to help plan a week that will leave you feeling well, inside and out:

  • Sunday
Relax. Try meditating, taking a walk in a natural setting, or reaching out spiritually or through prayer. Quiet reflection can improve your state of mind, help you collect your thoughts and re-energize for the week ahead.

  • Monday
Make a plan. Decide what tasks you need to complete for the week and make a plan for when and how to accomplish them. If you are over scheduled, decide what can wait for a week or two.

  • Tuesday
Surround yourself with supportive people. Make plans with family members and friends, or seek out activities at which you can meet new people, such as a club, class or support group.

  • Wednesday
Take care of your body. Taking care of yourself physically can improve your mental health. Eating nutritious meals, avoiding cigarettes, drinking alcohol only in moderation ( if at all), drinking adequate water, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep can all benefit your mental health.

  • Thursday
Give of yourself. Volunteer your time and energy to help someone else. Not only is it an opportunity to meet new people who may share your interests, but you will feel good about doing something for others and making a difference.

  • Friday
Broaden your horizons. Explore a new hobby, plant a garden, plan a trip, try a new recipe or restaurant, take dance lessons, or learn how to play an instrument or speak another language.

  • Saturday
Value yourself. Treat yourself with kindness and respect, and avoid self criticism. Take stock of the qualities you like about yourself, your accomplishments, and your unique abilities. Take time each day to relax, reflect, and restore.

If the stress or problems in your life are stopping you from functioning well, professional help may be needed. If you feel you need professional help, contact our local health affiliate, Mental Health Association in Putnam County II, Inc. at 845-278-7600 or visit www.mhaputnam.org .
