Celebrating Breastfeeding Month
August is recognized as National Breastfeeding Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding and ensuring that every family has the support and resources they need. The Department of Health, WIC Open Door, and Maternal Infant Services Network strive to communicate the benefits of breastfeeding to the community in variety of ways, year-round. And on August 1st, these Putnam-based agencies came together at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church for an event hosted by WIC Open Door, to celebrate and honor breastfeeding women.
At this celebration, about fifteen new and seasoned moms were able to interact with one another and offer support. Each mom received a certificate for breastfeeding and shared how breastfeeding has helped them and their babies. When families receive this kind of support, breastfeeding rates improve and lead to stronger families and babies. Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure infant health. It provides the necessary nutritional needs, strengthens their immune system, and lowers the risk of ear infections, respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal problems. It also fosters a bond between mother and child. Mothers that participate in breastfeeding have advantages to their health as well. It reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and postpartum depression.
However, breastfeeding is not always easy, and that is why community programs like Women, Infant, and Children Program (WIC) are so important. WIC provides families with access to lactation experts, peer consultants, and practical resources such as breast pumps and essential nutritional support. These services help parents overcome challenges, build confidence, and healthier babies.
In addition to the support and services offered by WIC Open Door in Brewster, the Putnam County Department of Health hosts a new moms support group each Wednesday at the Mahopac Public Library. A health department nurse, who is a certified lactation counselor, is available to provide support and answer a wide range of parenting questions, including breastfeeding, safe sleep, introducing foods, and more.
