LIBRARY PROGRAM COORDINATOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves the responsibility of overseeing, supervising and organizing the development of programs within a library. The work involves creating, promoting, coordination and facilitating library programs. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director, with leeway allowed for exercising independent judgement in the delivery of programs. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate staff and volunteers. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Coordinates event programming for the public and staff;
- Organizes, oversees and facilitates a calendar of events;
- Promotes programs via social media, e-newsletter, websites, email, and fliers;
- Researches, contacts and negotiates with potential program presenters and performers;
- Develops preliminary budget information and statistical reports for higher level management;
- Performs routine circulation, reserve and overdue functions relating to books, materials and equipment;
- Performs routine searches of and updates to computer records;
- Issues borrowers' cards according to library procedures;
- Answers telephones, takes messages and routes calls;
- Contacts patrons when requested books or materials are obtained for them;
- Operates and performs routine maintenance (e.g. changing toner, adding paper) of office machinery such as photocopiers, microform/reader/printer, microfiche reader, fax machines, computers;
- May supervise, assign and review the work of subordinate staff;
- May assist with duties for subordinate classes;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library service; thorough knowledge of library programs; working knowledge of the arrangement and uses of library materials; ability to establish relationships with patrons; ability to promote library programs to the community; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; tact and courtesy in dealing with staff and public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree; or
- High school or possession of a comparable diploma and two (2) years of experience in a library setting or coordination and administration of programs.
SPECIAL NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
