CERTIFIED LAB INSTRUCTOR

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work involves responsibility for providing 
psychomotor skills instruction, in accordance with any appropriate New York State and local 
guidelines and protocols, during practical lab sessions offered in conjunction with training courses in 
conducted at the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services Training and Operations Center. 
Work is performed under direct supervision of the Senior Certified Instructor Coordinator and the 
Director of Emergency Medical Services. Supervision is not a responsibility of this position. Performs 
related work as required.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (illustrative only)
Provides psychomotor skills instruction during practical lab sessions in accordance with current New 
York State guidelines and protocols, to support training course curricula where appropriate, 
as assigned;
Monitors trainees’ progress and maintaining records of trainee enrollment, attendance and 
performance;
Submits trainee enrollment, attendance and performance records and provides overview of student 
skill progress to Senior Certified Lab Instructor (SCLI) once lab courses are completed, or at 
any time such records are requested by the SCLI;
Maintains preparedness and familiarity with New York State requirements, guidelines and protocols, 
course content for general or specialized training courses, and local concerns and issues;
Supports established instructional goals;
Tests and evaluates trainees’ psychomotor skills as necessary, in accordance with New York State 
requirements and guidelines;
Provides trainees with feedback on their performance and requirements;
May provide trainees with remedial help as needed;
Performs a variety of related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good 
knowledge of theory, techniques and applicable laws, rules and regulations relative to specific 
emergency services areas of training; good knowledge of operation of specialized equipment utilized 
in emergency services; good knowledge of the effectiveness of training methodologies and 
motivational techniques; ability to meet specific instructional needs as directed; ability to 
communicate ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain 
effective working relationships.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma, one (1) year of experience as a 
Lab Instructor and meet special requirements as stated below.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession and maintenance of a valid Emergency Medical Technician Certification issued by 
New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. 
2. Possession and maintenance of a valid Certified Lab Instructor (CLI) certification issued by 
New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.


NOTE: The Certified Lab Instructor (CLI) cannot be assigned to instruct in any course offering a 
higher certification level than the CLI’s EMT certification level.
