HVAC Technician

The Putnam County Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates for the position of HVAC Technician.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This is a skilled technical service position in which the incumbent assists in the installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of all HVAC, plumbing, controls, electrical, and related systems located in County-owned buildings to insure efficient and reliable operation. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Master Mechanics with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment. Supervision is not normally a function of this position. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Assists in the service, repair, and replacement of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and plumbing equipment and systems;
  • Assists in the installation, repairs, and operation of electrical controls and equipment, including but not limited to related generators, motors, pumps, batteries, relays and thermostats, ;
  • Receives and investigates complaints concerning heating and ventilation;
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses system and equipment failures and creates a plan to resolve issues;
  • Monitors Building Management Systems (BMS) controls, responds to alarms, and revises BMS control points as needed;
  • Performs preventative maintenance on systems and mechanical equipment as required;
  • Makes emergency repairs to equipment and takes emergency action in connection with equipment failure to insure reinstatement of serviceability;
  • May work from building plans, blueprints, diagrams, drawings, and manuals to plan and lay out the placement, type and proper operation of equipment for renovations and new construction projects;
  • May assist colleagues in performing general building maintenance and minor carpentry tasks;
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle in connection with assignments;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three (3) years of experience in building maintenance, one (1) of which must have involved the maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC systems.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid, unrestricted, appropriate level driver’s license, and acceptable driving record are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

SCHEDULE: Full-time, Monday – Friday, 40 hours/week

SALARY RANGE : $57,863–$70,106 per year (2025)
