Statement on Hochul Signing Sales Tax Extension
I appreciate the governor signing this important legislation after the relentless efforts made by Senators Harckham and Rolison and Assembly members Slater and Levenberg to get this passed. This law ensures that Putnam County can maintain its existing sales tax rate, competitive with all neighboring NY counties, better enabling Putnam County to deliver another major property tax cut as well as continue its current sales tax cut through its exemption on clothing and footwear as part of next year’s budget.
Earlier this year, I asked the people of Putnam County what type of tax relief mattered most to them, and this is precisely what they asked for. This new law is part of a historic agreement with our towns and villages officials that will allow us to directly support critical capital projects, reduce our reliance on property taxes, and present the Putnam County Legislature with the largest property tax cut in county history. All in an effort to keep more money in the pockets of our residents. It’s a win for taxpayers and a strong step forward for a more affordable Putnam County. Simply put, this provides tax relief where it matters most.

Welcome Message
“Remember that Putnam County is home. Regardless of what may make us different as individuals, it is our respect for each-other as neighbors, our desire to step up and serve, to lend a hand, and leave this beautiful county better off than we found it. That is what makes this place so special. It is with that in mind that we as a county government are here to serve, and will always serve, with a desire to do better.” - Kevin M.
