For years, Sarah Calabro had a standing message for the owner of Kent Lakes Farm Market: Whenever he was ready to retire and sell the business, she wanted him to give her a call.

That day came in May 2018.

The longtime owner retired, and Calabro purchased the market. Just nine days later, she opened the doors and began operating Kent Lakes Farm Market, turning years of admiration for the business into a new chapter of her own.

Today, Calabro continues to operate the seasonal market at 164 Route 311 in Lake Carmel, combining her experience as a chef, personal chef and caterer with her passion for fresh food and the local community.

Kent Lakes Farm Market offers fresh produce, flowers and plants, along with a variety of locally sourced and prepared foods. Customers can find homemade quiches, empanadas, pies and other baked goods, as well as artisan cheeses, sausages, bacon, local coffee and other specialty products.

The market works with a variety of Hudson Valley producers and small businesses, including Harney & Sons, PickleLicious, Wallkill View Farms, Mario’s Brick Oven Breads, Rowe Farms, Truncali Farms and Remsburger's Honey.

For Calabro, a Lake Carmel resident, the business is about more than providing fresh food. Her background in the culinary industry has allowed her to bring her own experience and perspective to a market that was already an established part of the community.

Calabro’s menu for Thanksgiving has become popular with customers, providing delicious appetizers, sides, breads, quiches and desserts.

The story of Calabro’s ownership began with a simple conversation with an older business owner who was preparing for retirement. Nearly a decade later, that conversation has grown into a small-business journey that has allowed Calabro to preserve a familiar local market while putting her own stamp on the business.
